There were some doubt from some of our readers with regards to an earlier article where we mentioned 1080p displays coming this year for smartphones, but lo and behold, LG has announced just that. Despite being a for the intended market large display, the 1920×1080 resolution means that the PPI stands at an amazing 440 pixels which should be compared to the iPhone 4S at 326ppi. LG is using an AH-IPS – Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching – panel which should allow for wide viewing angles, something of a must in mobile devices.

LG will be showing off the new display next week at SID 2012 Display Week in Boston and the company is expecting to start shipping the new display sometime in the second half of this year, which is a fantastically imprecise launch window. It'll be interesting to see what devices will use the new display, but we'd guess LG Electronics will be one of the first, most likely on a device specific for the Korean market.
