LG has released its latest TV, with a screen spanning a whopping 84 inches and a resolution that is four times 1080p high-definition.

The monstrous TV is just shy of the 90-inch model made by Sharp, but LG employs the advanced picture display of 4K, which shows a mind-boggling eight million pixels per frame, making the term “ultra-definition” very applicable.

The technology is in its infancy, but LG's CEO, Havis Kwon, said that “it was important for LG to claim a stake in this space.”

Rivals like Panasonic and Toshiba have already made 20-inch and 55-inch models using 4K, and Sony and Samsung are working on similar TVs, but LG's much larger version demonstrates its hope to become the leader in the TV market, held back only by Samsung.

4K is seen by many as the next step up from high-definition, but it will likely take years before it becomes the standard. High-definition TVs are still not in place in every home due to high prices.

The supersized ultra-definition TV comes at an even high price tag, however: $22,010. We don't expect many people to get one, or indeed for any to be on display at our local electronics store.

The 84-inch beast is available now in South Korea and will launch in other locations in September.
