LG might include custom SoCs in its mobile devices and tablets next year.
There have been rumors indicating that LG is making its own SoC since the early half of 2013.
More news on that front has been divulged today as it has been mentioned by Korean news site DigitalTimes that LG is working on two different SoCs. One is a quad-core version and the other an eight-core variant. Called Odin, these processors will be based on ARM’s Cortex A9 and A15 cores.
LG will use ARM’s architecture and tweak it to create a customized version of these cores. This is similar to what Qualcomm does with the Krait line of CPUs, and Samsung with the Exynos series. While Qualcomm’s hardware designs are manufactured at TMSC, Samsung manufactures the Exynos line entirely in-house at Samsung LSI. LG will likely use TMSC’s facilities as it does not have an in-house fab unit.
According to DigitalTimes, LG’s SoC would have a quad-core version, which will likely include the ARM Mali-T604 GPU along with the customized CPU offering that will be clocked at 2.2 GHz. The quad-core version will likely be featured in LG’s smart TVs next year.
The eight-core version would be similar to what Samsung has achieved with the Exynos 5420 Octa, and will come with ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture and feature the Mali-T760 GPU from ARM. The eight-core CPU would likely be a combination of two different Cortex processors, Cortex A9 and A15, which have different clocks, Cortex A9 at 1.7 GHz and Cortex A15 a 2.2 GHz. The eight-core will likely be included in mobile devices and tablets, and should make its way on to the successor to the LG G2 and the G Pad tablet.
