For once, malware is the hero of our story. They’re mostly known for ruining your computer, but now they may gain a reputation for combating child porn and pedophiles. A 21-year-old recently got a pop-up advertisement demanding fines for being in possession of child pornography. He promptly took his laptop to the police and was arrested for three counts of having child porn on his computer.

Normally, ransomware, which is what the 21-year-old fell victim to, will lock the computer with an official looking message and then demand money in exchange for unlocking the computer again. The man in question however, didn’t want to risk paying for nothing, so he went to the police, computer in tow and asked if there were any outstanding warrants against him.

Not the brightest pedophile…

Unsurprisingly, when a man comes into the police station and asks if there are any child-porn warrants against him, the police gets a search warrant and searches the computer. They discovered chat logs and pictures and then promptly arrested him on three counts of child pornography, as well as indecent liberties with a minor. He’s currently being help without bail. Of course, there is a possibility that the virus itself spewed the porn, but what are the chances of that?
