Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets have only fairly recently gotten support for 802.11n Wi-Fi, but it’s the slower 150Mbit version rather than the full speed 300Mbit version. As of today, this is no longer the case, as Marvell has announced its first MIMO 802.11n Wi-Fi solution for mobile devices with the introduction of the Avastar 88W8797 dual band Wi-Fi system on a chip.

However, the features don’t stop here as the 88W8797 it’s also equipped with transmit beamforming technology which allows for extended range at improved signal quality compared to your average 802.11n 2×2 MIMO solutions and it also supports both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands unlike most competing solutions. It also sports the Bluetooth 4.0 low-energy standard which offers a longer range, lower power usage and quicker set-up time, but lower bit rate compared to Bluetooth 2.1 class 2 devices. Finally it also incorporates an FM receiver and transmitter to round things off, making it a pretty comprehensive solution for mobile devices.

Although the 88W8797 was designed for mobile devices, Marvell is keen to point out that it’s suitable for a wide range of other Wi-Fi enabled devices that can take advantage of the extra performance on offer such as digital video players, notebooks, set-top boxes and digital TVs. Thanks to being a single chip solution the 88W8797 should be easy to integrate even into small devices and hopefully it’ll prove to be cost effective as well. Marvell will be demoing the Avastar 88W8797 at the MWC in Barcelona next week and we’ll be on location to take a closer look.
