McDonald's has come under fire in Australia over sending out spam marketing messages without user consent.

McDonald's has come under fire in Australia over sending out spam marketing messages without user consent.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), the country's media watchdog, has issued a warning to the fast food chain, which it said was in breach of Australia's Spam Act.

McDonald's was sending out messages to friends of people who have subscribed to the Happy Meal website, without seeking the consent of the friends and without offering an unsubscribe option.

The ACMA warned that such activity could cause significant damage to a company's reputation, something that a big firm like McDonald's cannot afford to risk. It warned that companies cannot assume consent and said that this is one of the most common types of complaint it receives.

The fast food outlet has now ended the spam marketing campaign.
