Microsoft might launch an Xbox TV in the future, which could be its contribution to the eight generation of gaming consoles or an entirely new product altogether.

David Perry, head of open cloud gaming platform Gaikai, said that he predicts that Microsoft will enter the TV market, following in the footsteps of Sony and Apple by offering a cloud gaming system.

In an interview with CVG Perry argued that Microsoft has little choice but to launch an Xbox TV, and he suggested that Apple was also in the process of launching cloud gaming products on its iTV, which he expects will launch later this year.

Some might wonder who Perry is, however, and what insight into the industry he really has, and others might question the impartiality of his predictions, as both Microsoft and Apple cloud gaming offerings would provide significant benefits to his business.

However, it's an interesting possibility, and this could be an area where Microsoft goes with its next Xbox, the much-rumoured Xbox 720, which is expected to release by the end of 2013. It would certainly give Microsoft a product that is very different to what Nintendo will be offering with the Wii U this year and might help ensure it remains ahead of rival Sony, which has yet to announce its next-generation console plans.
