02 Microsoft said to charge more for Windows 8 licences to OEMs

If the rumour mill is true, then it looks like Windows 8 will cost more than previous versions of Windows, at least to Microsoft's OEM partners. There's no word on by how much Microsoft wanted to raise the price, but apparently it's a significant amount.

If the rumour mill is true, then it looks like Windows 8 will cost more than previous versions of Windows, at least to Microsoft's OEM partners. There's no word on by how much Microsoft wanted to raise the price, but apparently it's a significant amount.

We're not sure what Microsoft is thinking if this proves to be true, as Apple has dropped the price of its Mac OS to very reasonable levels, especially compared to Windows 7. OEM's have always paid a discounted price compared to the retail pricing due to a wide range of reasons such as bulk purchasing, lesser packaging, generally no documentation and of course more recently, no media.

If Microsoft is now planning on charging the OEM's more, then this will directly affect the end product price which means us consumers are going to have to pay more for our next product featuring Windows 8. The biggest concern at the moment appears to be related to Ultrabook pricing, as a lot of notebook manufacturers are betting their future on new touch-screen models and with increase software costs, it looks like we can't expect to see any cheaper Ultrabooks any time soon.
