An unsurprising move following months of disappointing sales, price cuts for Microsoft’s Surface Pro and related products, are turning from temporary promotions to permanent slashes.

surface Microsoft Surface price cuts becoming permanent; Surface Pro down $100

Microsoft’s $100 price cuts on Surface Pros were supposed to last through August 29th. But today, August 29th, Microsoft has announced that the prices will become permanent cuts.

After the surprisingly poor performance of Microsoft’s Surface tablets, these reductions come as little surprise, and may be one of the few ways Microsoft can possibly increase interest in the device.

“The customer response to recent Surface pricing and keyboard-cover promotions has been exciting to see, and we are proud to begin rollout of Surface Pro, Touch Cover, and Surface RT bundles at even more affordable prices starting August 29,” said a Microsoft representative in an emailed statement to Neowin.

In total, three items are being affected by the price cuts. Besides prices of the Microsoft Surface tablet itself, those of Touch Cover accessories and Surface RT bundle are also being reduced.

The final cuts amount to the following:

  • $100 off of Surface Pro tablets, bringing the price of an entry level Surface Pro to $799
  • $40 off touch covers, which will now begin at $79. Limited edition covers start at $89
  • $50 off Surface RT bundles, bringing the starting price to $399

Hopefully these cuts will help to prevent the Microsoft Surface from going the way of the ill-fated HP TouchPad. In the end, TouchPad went the way of the dinosaurs in one final, frantic firesale.

There are many similarities to draw between the two products. Most importantly, both were ambitious, well-made, poorly received, and finally sold for much less than their original prices.
