The creator of the popular Minecraft game has criticised big shot gaming company Electronic Arts, claiming it is “destroying” gaming.

Markus Persson, better known as Notch, took offence to EA's decision to market some of its products with the term “indie,” such as in the “EA Indie Bundle” on Steam, which includes DeathSpank: DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue, Gatling Gears, Shank, Shank 2 and Warp.

“EA releases an 'indie bundle'? That's not how that works, EA. Stop attempting to ruin everything, you bunch of cynical bastards,” Persson said on Twitter, adding: “Indies are saving gaming. EA is methodically destroying it.”

Persson was careful to qualify his remarks by saying that he's not questioning the games, which he considers good, but rather EA's misuse of the term.

It does raise questions about how appropriate the “indie” term is for products published by one of the world's largest gaming companies, and if EA's marketing team is trying to cash in on the growing success of the independent game industry, which is being helped along by the likes of Kickstarter.

Persson also added that he no longer considers his company Mojang to be “indie,” most likely due to its growing mainstream success.
