Minecraft is a story of greatness from small beginnings. Now, the sandbox mining game has hit 11 million sales on personal computers.
Minecraft is an incredible success. Even after seeing years of success it is still selling in excess of 12,000 copies every day. Now, the combined sales for the game’s pc release (including Windows, Mac OS, and Linux platforms) has reached 11 million copies sold, an impressive number. In response, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson tweeted “Minecraft has now sold 11 million copies on PC/Mac/Linux! That’s more than the number of atoms in the observable universe”.
Of course, today, Minecraft has seen releases on several other platforms, including Xbox and notably, smartphones and tablets. While the home computer has just gotten to 11 million, iOS and Android devices have already come close to eclipsing that amount, currently holding 10 million sales.

With such success, it’s pretty clear Notch doesn’t need any help selling the game, but many companies still approach him with offers to help monetize it. This is something Persson rejects outright: “I frequently receive emails from people who want to ‘help monetize http://minecraft.net.’ My reply is usually ‘No’, sometimes ‘Go away,” he said, “Latest hopeful partner was avg, offering us 20k upfront to bundle it with the Minecraft launcher. No. Not as long as I work here.”
