Mojang's mega-popular block-building Indie sensation has made its way onto the credit-card-sized Raspberry Pi, allowing gamers to play around with Minecraft's source code and become amateur programmers.
Minecraft, the mega-popular voxel-style block builder Indie, has currently been ported onto the Raspberry Pi. This opens up new doors and allows gamers to explore and play around with the game's source code as well as build their programming skills in the process.
The Minecraft: Pi Edition is now available as a free download and includes support for multiple programming languages. Mojang's Aron Nieminen and Daniel Frisk have been working on a port for the Raspberry Pi for a few months now, and had the following to say about the possibilities of Minecraft: Pi Edition:
"The possibilities are massive. You could organise the cheapest LAN party of all time, or use the Pi to learn the fundamentals of programming on a miniscule budget. It’s like hacking your way into Minecraft and modifying the game world with code, a bit like being Notch, Jeb, or Nathan, but arguably more fun and less stressful.
You can start by building structures in the traditional Minecraft way, but once you’ve got to grips with the in-game features, there’s opportunity to break open the code and use programming language to manipulate things in the game world. You’ll be learning new skills through Minecraft."
Creepers love Raspberry Pi. And LEGOs.
The Raspberry Pi is a curious piece of technology; about the size of a credit-card, the single-board computer was created by The Raspberry Pi Foundation in order to teach basic programming skills and provide a launching point for beginners. The Raspberry Pi is an inexpensive ARM GNU/Linux box (usually around $25-35) and supports a variety of operating systems, along with a "Pi Store" that offers a myriad of free downloadable software.
The Minecraft: Pi Edition seems to be a much more entertaining and fun way to polish your programming abilities, and provides a playground for gamers and coders alike to experiment with a multitude of possibilities.
