mirrorsedge Mirrors Edge 2 is in development!

The 2008 free running action adventure game Mirror's Edge is getting a sequel, according to EA Games' vice president, finally confirming rumors which have been circling for a long time.

Back in 2008, DICE, the studio behind the widely popular Battlefield franchise, released Mirror's Edge, a unique first person action adventure all about free running. Mirror's edge was stylish and artistic, painting a game world in minimalist design with white buildings splashed with strong colors, and presented a gameplay style that differed from the majority of games out there. It received mostly good reviews but it was never a big hit, selling two million copies in total (compare this to Black Ops II, which sold a million copies in it's first day alone).

Fans of the game have been speculating for years (and rumors have occasionally kept those speculations alive and well) that despite it never really being a mega hit, DICE was working, or would be working in the future, on a sequel. As it turns out, this is absolutely true. A former EA employee, Ben Cousins, tweeted recently that it was general knowledge in the Stockholm development scene (DICE is based in Stockholm, Sweden), that a sequel to the game was in the making.

The tweet came in response to an Xbox Magazine interview with Patrick Söderlund, vice president at EA Games. The interview queried Söderlund on why EA takes risks with developing games like Mirror's Edge, when franchises like Battlefield are much safer to produce, due to the large fanbase which almost guarantees the games to sell well. "It's also important for us. The DICE guys are roughly 300 people in the Stockholm studio – not all of them are working on Battlefield things, and that's intentional, because we don't want to become a Battlefield factory," Söderlund explained. If the people working at DICE knew they'd be making Battlefield games only for the rest of their lives, chances are they wouldn't stick around for very long.

So far, there's little information on the Mirror's Edge sequel, but we'll let you know the minute something shows up.
