Meego. That’s the name of the new open-source platform from the collaboration of Intel and Nokia. According to both companies, the Linux-based platform can be run on various computing devices, including netbooks, smartphones, tablets, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems.
Kai Oistamo (above pic right), Executive Vice President, Devices, Nokia and Renee James, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Software and Services Group, Intel, were at the event for the joint announcement of Meego.
“It was just eight months ago when Intel and Nokia announced that we would be expanding our relationship. We committed then that we would be collaborating on future mobile devices and mobile architecture, and to coordinate our effort on open-source projects” says Oistamo.
“MeeGo brings the best of Moblin and Maemo software into one Linux-based computing platform. MeeGo will be hosted at the Linux foundation and will be fully open-sourced project. The open capability will be governed by the best practices of open source. We will continue to collaborate and contribute and add capability, allowing partners to be able to develop value add on top of MeeGo. This includes application, services and support. MeeGo will be targeting a wide range of devices which include possible computing devices as well as netbooks, tablets, connected TVs, mediaphones and in-built infotainment systems,” says James.
Oistamo also mentioned that Nokia’s Symbian OS will still be around and that current existing Maemo will integrate seamless with MeeGo.

You can find out more about MeeGo at their website (http://meego.com/). According to Intel and Nokia, developers can write applications and market them through Nokia’s Ovi Store and Intel AppUpSM Center.
