xoom2 Motorola Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition launches

Motorola has launched a pair of Android tablet in the shape of the Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition and the two are quite different, even though the name wouldn't suggest so. The Xoom 2 should be replacing the original Xoom, as both feature a 10.1-inch display, whereas the Xoom 2 Media Edition has a smaller 8.2-inch screen, although both models should have the same 1280×800 resolution.

The two tablets share a similar design, run Android 3.2 and feature gorilla glass as well as rubberised edges to improve the grip. Both tablets are powered by a dual core 1.2GHz TI OMAP 4430 SoC which has been paired up with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, Wi-Fi, a rear 5Megapixel camera with LED flash and a front facing 1.3Megapixel camera. Both models also has a micro USB port and a micro HDMI port, with the Xoom 2 also having a micro SD card slot, although it's apparently not enabled at the moment. The Xoom 2 Media Edition also features an infrared transmitter which allows you to use it as a universal remote control.

Currently the two models are only available in the UK and Ireland, although we'd expect to see broader availability over time. There's also a potential of a 3G model for the Xoom 2, as it's already equipped with a SIM card slot, but the UK model will be Wi-Fi only. The Xoom 2 weighs in at 599g while the smaller Xoom 2 Media Edition is a bit more portable at 386g. Apparently the Xoom 2 Media Edition also sports a subwoofer speaker, although we'd have to hear it to believe it. Price wise the Xoom 2 will retail for £379.99 (S$780) with the Xoom 2 Media Edition coming in slightly cheaper at £329.99 (S$650).
