Mounting the Prometiea onto the Graphics Card
A guide to mounting the Prometiea onto your graphics card without using a C-clamp.
Well, I’ve just borrowed a Prometiea to use on my Radeon 9800 Pro. On the bumpy
ride back home it sprung a leak on the discharge line braze joint but no problem,
and I got it brazed and charged back up.
Ok, so there it was positioned nicely so that when the cooling head touches
the graphics core, the flexible “hose” is bent nicely without exerting
too much pressure on the joint as this is one of the most fragile part of the
I was intending to use 1 or 2 C-clamps to hold the cooling head onto the graphics
card. However, I didn’t really like the extreme bulkiness of two Clamps on my
graphics card so I decided to fashion a hold-down for it.
The materials I used:
1 Aluminum plate
I cut out a piece of aluminum plate of about 2mm thickness with a hole cut
out in the centre that goes through the exposed copper base of the Prommie’s
cooling head as seen below.
There are 2 holes drilled for 2 screws to be inserted that is facing the cooling
head. The alignment of the holes will be the alignment of the 2 holes on the
cooling head of the Prommie.
There are another 2 holes drilled and 2 screws inserted so that these 2 screws
will be facing the graphics card. The alignment of these 2 holes will be the
alignment of the 2 holes of your graphics card.
Next, I put the plate onto the cooling head with the 2 screws going through
and coming out from the other side of the cooling head. That is where I put
in washers and tighten these 2 screws with nuts like in the following pictures.
So now its ready to be mounted. I put the cooling head onto the graphics core
with the 2 remaining screws coming out from the back of my card. Here, I tighten
it with 2 nuts, washers and springs. Of course, its safer to take it off one time to check for a nice imprint of
thermal paste on the cooling head indicating a good mount.
Due to the large perimeter of the cooling head cover, I had to insert put in
a cold plate of about 6mm between cooling head and graphics core because it
gets blocked by the surrounding capacitors on the Hercules Radeon 9800 Pro.
This will not impede cooling too much and lets you clear the capacitors on your
graphics card without cracking open the cooling head’s casing. This might or
might not be a necessary step depending on your graphics card. The cold plate
must be insulated around the sides as well
You will need to insulate your graphics card of course because its going to
get real cold. And because I disabled the heating element on the cooling head
cover, I put extra insulation onto the cooling head or else the cover would
start to “sweat”. On disabling the heating element, you might get
some icing on the bottom of the compressor, I know I have on mine but my system
may be a little overcharged with refrigerant. This icing is not good for the
compressor in the long run when it has to compress liquid so care has to be
taken. For me, I let out some refrigerant bit by bit till the icing stops.
I hope this can come in helpful for some of the folks out there looking for
some extreme cooling on their graphics card.
