msi x460 MSIs X460 packs quad core CPU, weighs less than 2kg

For those of you looking for a high-performance notebook with a good portability ratio the selection tends to be fairly slim, but MSI's new X460 is the first notebook we've seen that is addressing this market. The X-series has traditionally  been MSI's thin and light notebooks, although the performance has been suffering somewhat due to this, not so with the X460 as it packs a quad core CPU and then some.

We wouldn't call the X460 thin and light, although for its category it really is, since this 14-inch notebook weighs in at a smidgen under 2kg, yet it's a two spindle machine with a discrete graphics card. MSI really has packed as many features as possible into the X460. Although several SKUs will be available with a choice of Core i3, i5 and i7 CPUs, the high-end model will be kitted out with the Core i7-2630QM which is the most basic quad core model in the Sandy Bridge family, yet a big step up from a dual core for those that need the processing power.

The graphics option is a GeForce GT 540M with 1GB DDR3 memory. The screen is a standard 14-inch model with 1366×768 resolution which is really the only weak point with the X460 and we'd really like to see a higher resolution option. Other features include hard drive options to 750GB, a swappable optical drive which we were told can be replaced by an optional secondary hard drive and the two drives can be setup to run in RAID.

Port wise MSI has fitted a pair of USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI port, a D-sub port, an Ethernet port, a memory card reader and a pair of audio jacks. The X460 also sports Bluetooth 3.0 and of course 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and a webcam.

The overall finish is pretty good as well with a metal feel to it similar to the CX640 series. MSI is really starting to become an interesting player in the notebook market, especially as its last few models have all been a huge step up from its previous generation of notebooks.
