Namco Bandai is taking a leaf out out of Kickstarter's book with a unique approach to pre-orders for the Wizard's Edition of its upcoming Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.

North American customers can take part in the aptly-titled Ninostarter, a crowd sourcing initiative that rewards a higher number of pre-orders by unlocking additional items to be included in the Wizard's Edition.

The PlayStation 3 exclusive does not launch until 22 January 2013, but gamers only have until 31 August of this year, 41 days away, to make their pre-orders, and to encourage their friends and family, and perhaps total strangers, to pre-order too if they don't want to miss out on the higher tiers of goodies.

The current version of the Wizard's Edition includes the game itself, a 300-page hardback Wizard's Companion spellbook and bestiary, a plushie of Drippy, the helpful guide of the story, and the exclusive Golden Mite and Golden Drongo in-game familiars.

At the time of writing the Ninostarter project has 2507 fans and progress towards the first pre-order goal is at 35 percent. It does not say what will be unlocked then, but we suppose that's half the fun of it. Let's just hope that it will be worthwhile after begging all and sundry to grab a copy.

Kickstarter has been a popular way for game studios to secure funding, but Namco's approach is a relatively new method for enticing pre-orders of the limited edition. If it catches on it could be copied by other big name gaming companies.

The Wizard's Edition is available for pre-order for $99.99.
