Just a month after the massacre of 26 children and teachers at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the US National Rifle Association (NRA) has released a shooting game for mobile devices, which children can play.

While both President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden are preparing to unveil plans to address gun control in the country, the powerful gun lobby group is encouraging more use of guns with the launch of the video game NRA: Practice Range.

The title is available for the iPhone and iPad for free, while users can buy additional guns in-game for $0.99 each. Nine firearms are available, and users are tasked with shooting a variety of targets.

Perhaps the most concerning thing about the game is that it has been given a rating of 4+, meaning it has been deemed suitable for very young children to play. If nothing else, the lack of sensitivity in regard to the numerous children killed at Sandy Hook is sure to invite further criticism of the NRA.

The move is also considerably hypocritical, given the NRA previously blamed violent video games for the shootings. The association claims its app is about striking the balance between gaming and education, but many will see it as a poorly-timed and insensitive attempt to encourage further gun use in a country already plagued by gun crime.
