Singapore, 23 March 2009 – The National Environment Agency (NEA) is developing Weather@SG, Singapore’s first mobile weather service to provide residents with weather information and forecasts via their mobile phones. 

As a one-year pilot project for Weather@SG, NEA will be using “Microsoft Virtual Earth” real time map services and development expertise. Both organizations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the launch of World Meteorological Day yesterday (23 March 2009).
 
The Weather@SG will be designed to provide the public with mobile access to key weather products, currently available on NEA’s corporate website.

1. Current weather, together with a three-day forecast
2. Real-time rain areas animation
3. Temperature, wind speed and direction, and humidity information at various locations around the island

With Weather@SG, users will be able to access weather information anytime, anywhere.

This mobile weather service will harness the capabilities and resources of both NEA and Microsoft Singapore, by combining NEA’s real-time weather and forecast information on Singapore with Microsoft Singapore’s real-time map services. These mobile weather products are then delivered to mobile devices enhanced with rich graphics and an intuitive interface design.
 
With Weather@SG, which will be available later this year, NEA hopes to improve upon its customer-focused services and extend the reach of its weather services by leveraging on the high mobile phone penetration rate in Singapore.
