nec lavie z NEC announces 999g 13.3 inch LaVie Z notebook in Japan

If there's a company that seems to understand what Ultrabooks is all about – and no, we're not talking about Apple – it has to be NEC, as its upcoming LaVie Z is a mind-blowingly  light Ultrabook that weighs in at a mere 999g. This is at least in part thanks to its lithium-magnesium alloy chassis which is said to be half the weight of the usual aluminium alloys used in notebooks.

Sadly, the company didn't reveal much in terms of specifications beyond the fact that we're looking at a 13.3-inch Ultrabook. All that we can deduct from the pictures is that it'll have at least one USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, a single audio jack, an HDMI port and a memory card reader.

NEC also revealed that the LaVie Z will be using an Intel ULV Ivy Bridge CPU which isn't exactly a surprise and we'd presume the company is using the UM77 chipset as well as an mSATA SSD, or possibly something even smaller to help keep the weight down. Sadly we'll have to wait until later this summer for the LaVie Z to launch and we have a feeling its price won't be as light to carry as the Ultrabook itself.
