NEC Japan has announced its first USB 3.0 controller, backwards compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0. It is expected to hit retail somewhere in Mid June this year.

Based on the version 1.0 specifications, it is capable of supporting USB3.0 Superspeed (5Gbps) along with the older 480Mbps, 12Mbps, and the 1.5Mbps specifications.

Drivers will be provided at no cost and the connectors used on this card will be using the USB 3.0 Standard-A (literally a USB2.0 female connector but with 5 extra pins)

A conventional test of comparing how fast it is to transfer a 25GB Blu-ray disc from disc drive to the PC was used. Results show an impressive 70second transfer with USB3.0 interface as compared to 14minutes with USB 2.0.

Prices will be around 1500 yen per card.
