NEC released the Express5800/110Ca, a PC server embedded with a water-cooling system. By replacing the air-cooling fan directly mounted on the microprocessor with the water-cooling system, the company has lowered the noise level from the previous 45-50dB to 30dB. The company has priced the server at ¥188,000 (excluding tax) and is starting shipments on December 27, 2004. This water-cooled PC server also features two sensors to increase its reliability, one of which monitors the rotation cycle of the pump motor, the other of which monitors the humidity within the chassis. The server also comes with software to alert the administrator (via email) and automatically shut down the server if, for instance, the sensors detect an irregular stop of the pump or a leak of coolant liquid. If the coolant leaks, however, the software will not immediately shut down the server, because coolant is not electrically conductive. NEC guarantees a service life of 5 years for the water-cooling system and other components in the PC server.
