A new title in the Batman Arkham series is believed to be in the works by Warner Bros. Interactive, and a recent re-naming of the franchise's official Facebook site adds more credit to the possibility.
The official Facebook page for Warner Bros. Interactive's highly acclaimed Batman series has recently went through a change, being edited from "Batman: Arkham City" to "Batman: Arkham".
That in itself doesn't point too much, but when you consider the confirmation made in February by Time Warner CFO John K. Martin during a quarterly earnings call that a yet-unnamed "Batman Arkham 3" was in the works, this may point to something substantial.
"And we also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise. So all in all, we expect Warners to post another very strong year in 2013. And with a little luck, the year should be as good or maybe even a little bit better than 2012." — Time Warner Management Q4 2012 Earnings Call Transcript
The mention in the transcript itself of a new Batman Arkham game is very brief, but it's still clear, and some gaming publications believe that this new title could be the silver-age Batman game that was rumored last year.
Additionally, it has been rumored that Rocksteady Studios–the development team that's worked on the past two Batman Arkham titles–won't be developing Batman Arkham 3. Instead it's believed that the Canadian studio Warner Bros. Montreal will head up development, yet this has yet to be officially confirmed and still remains rumor.
Due to the success of the previous two releases in Warner Bros.' franchise–Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman; Arkham City–the possibility of a new release is quite realistic, especially given the brief mention within the transcript itself.
It will be interesting to see what changes in game mechanics and features that are implemented in Batman: Arkham 3, and what direction the story goes in. Many gamers out there would definitely enjoy an old-fashioned silver-age adventure that explores the Dark Knight's early history, and there is a veritable library of comic book source material to glean ideas from.
We'll have more information on these developments as time goes on, and it is believed that Batman: Arkham 3 may be released for both current and next-gen systems, depending on its planned release.
