New HighPoint RocketStor Dock Leverages Two USB 3.0 Connections
HighPoint's newest 3.5-inch/2.5-inch SATA drive dock, the RocketStor 5122B, leverages the bandwidth of two independent USB 3.0 host interfaces. This unique feature can also be used to share the dock between two PCs.
Known more for its RocketRAID enterprise-grade HBA addon-cards, HighPoint has been making inroads to the consumer storage market for quite some time. These efforts are led by its RocketStor product family, the latest member of which, is a unique dual 3.5-inch/2.5-inch SATA drive dock, which features two USB 3.0 host interfaces.
The RocketStor 5122B from HighPoint features a rather convention "toaster-dock" design. It has two drive bays, capable of holding hard drives and solid-state drives in the 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form-factors, with SATA 6 Gb/s interface. Each of the two bays has its own USB-to-SATA host-controller, making it what is essentially two single-bay USB 3.0 docks rolled into one. HighPoint claims the approach results in over 400 MB/s of bandwidth for each bay. The SATA host supports drives with volume sizes of up to 4 TB.
The RocketStor 5122B also comes with a one-touch backup feature, which works with bundled software, to back-up data from a host PC into the specified drives, or between two installed drives. Measuring 135mm (W) x 121mm (L) x 70mm (H), the dock weighs about 1 kg. It uses an external power-supply. The dock supports Windows Vista/2008/7, and Mac OS X.
HighPoint did not release pricing information, but talked briefly about a future product, the RocketStor 5212, which features a 10 Gb/s Thunderbolt interface instead of two USB 3.0.
