While Apple did an untypical thing and attacked NVIDIA and their Tegra 3 quad-core chip, claiming 4x better performance, the first benchmark results tell a different story, especially in Futuremark’s Peacekeeper benchmark.
Firstly, Notebook Magazine ran an article in which editors compared the New iPad (iPad 3) and ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime, powered by NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor. In their comparison, they did find a benchmark or two where Apple’s A5X chip managed to beat NVIDIA Tegra 3 but in all honesty, there were benchmarks in which A5X got hammered by Tegra 3. If I was CEO of NVIDIA, I could not be happier for the amount of free PR given by Tim Cooke and the fruity gang.
According to the company, “Peacekeeper takes 5 minutes to run during which time it evaluates the browser’s performance with a rendering test, WebGL test, HTML5 video test, HTML5 canvas test, HTML5 web worker test, data manipulation tests, DOM operations test and text parsing tests. Yes, it is odd seing Tegra 2-based tablet beating the Tegra 3-based one, but that is not surprising, given the load on the internal bus. Still, the difference in clock (T20 operates at 1GHz, T30 operates at 1.3GHz) should give better results. Pleasant surprise is AMD powered Acer W500, which leads the tablet pack. As the picture above clearly suggests, tablets from 2011 and 2012 are still around 10 times slower than a standard gaming PC from 2009.
