A Taiwanese flash card maker said it will take the wraps of a new flash memory architecture this March at the CeBit exhibition in Hannover, Germany. The memory architecture will enable flash-based cards that are 66 percent smaller than reduced-size MMC or miniSD cards currently coming into the market. The new memory is called M¼-Flash. The architecture is related to work by a consortium of Taiwanese companies for a new flash card format, dubbed M¼-Card. The format is compatible at lower data transfer speeds with the popular Secure Digital and MultiMediaCard formats already in the market, but offers speeds twice that of USB 2.0 at a lower price. M¼-Flash supports full function specifications of MMC 3.x and 4.x with newly proposed mechanical form factors of 20-pin removable card (12mm X 17mm X 1.0mm) and optional 48-pin lead-frame package for embedded modules. M¼-Flash can support MMC 4.x + USB + Smart Card mode or support M¼-Card with a maximum transfer speed of 120MB/s.
