Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics have announced that the latest Tomb Raider game, intended to once again reboot the series, has been delayed until 2013.

Darrell Gallagher, head of Crystal Dynamics, said that the studio had two aims when it set out to make the new Lara Croft title, to craft a “modern” Tomb Raider game and to make the “best game of our careers.”

It is this latter goal that has led to the game being pushed back from its original release schedule in Autumn of this year to some time in the first quarter of 2013, a delay of a number of months that will also mean the game will miss out on the lucrative Christmas shopping season.

“We're doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve,” Gallagher said. “We believe that this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. The game is looking amazing and we can't wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.”

A number of highly-anticipated games have been delayed recently, including BioShock Infinite. Unlike that game, however, the fact that Tomb Raider will still be shown off at E3 suggests the version the studio currently has won't be too far off from the end product, which might give players hope for an early release next year.
