After the 55th ETSI Technical Committee (ETC) meeting in Osaka, Japan on June 1st, the committee has agreed to a new form factor for the UICC, or SIM card.

The new SIM card form factor will have all the same functionality as the previous, but the ETC announced that the new form factor takes into consideration the amount of space the SIM card occupy in phones.  In the fourth form factor (4FF), the SIM card will be 40% smaller than current design; measuring at 12.3mm wide x 8.8mm high x 0.67mm thick.

A new SIM card design doesn’t mean that the new form factor won’t be backward compatible.  It will be packaged and delivered in a form that will fit current phone models as well as future models.

There were more than one proposals of the new SIM’s form factor.  Apple Inc., Nokia, and RIM presented their designs and it seems like Apple has won ETSI’s approval.  Apple’s nano-SIM design is 12.3mm x 8.8mm, and thus it’s a clear match to ETSI’s formal statement regarding the new SIM card standard.
