Google Glass Next gen Google Glass to look indistinguishable from your average sunglasses?

Recent patents filed indicate that the next generation Google Glass will have a regular sunglasses-like design, featuring dual see through displays. This futuristic product is being actively developed by Google X Lab, a secret facility run by Google that has earlier developed products like driverless cars.

First reported by popular News/Rumors aggregator website Unwired View, an mockup of the next generation Google Glass presents itself as a regular sunglasses-like design. In short, Google X wants to make their product look like regular sunglasses (so that people won't know you're Googling them up right then!). Also, the next generation design will pack dual see through displays. This means that both displays will be able to show you computer generated images and can be used for UI display purposes while allowing you to look through them as you would through regular sunglasses.

In a patent application listed here, this device has been described as “Near-to-eye display with diffraction grating that bends and focuses light”. If you do follow the tech jargon, read:

"A near-to-eye optical system includes an optically transmissive substrate having a see-through display region and a repeating pattern of diffraction elements. The repeating pattern of diffraction elements is disposed across the see-through display region of the optically transmissive substrate and organized into a reflective diffraction grating that bends and focuses computer generated image ("CGI") light impingent upon the reflective diffraction grating. The see-through display region is at least partially transmissive to external ambient light impingent upon an exterior side of the optically transmissive substrate and at least partially reflective to the CGI light impingent upon an interior side of the optically transmissive substrate opposite the exterior side."

We don't know how far through Google X Lab is with this technology but you rest assured knowing that the next generation Glass is a few years away, considering Google still hasn't finished development of their first iteration (read, Explorer units) which looks like a proof-of-concept than the final product. The final product is what's shown in this leaked image and fresh patent, and is a product that I would actually like to buy and wear and use everyday. Well wouldn't you?
