Flash:

The first thing that caught my attention is the camera’s flash. It looks small but as I tested some shots in a various lighting conditions, it was able to fill-in those shadows well.

Lens:

The S4000′s lens come with 4x optical zoom, aperture of f/3.2 at the widest angle and f/5.9 at full zoom with a focal range of 50cm in normal mode and 8cm at Macro mode.

It isn’t the best lens, the image quality is acceptable. Within the S4000, it relies on digital processing for “VR image stablisation”. It is a feature that I will not rely too much although it does help a little.

The Bottom

It’s one connector to rule them all! The proprietary USB connector (seen above with USB, A/V Out) can be used to charge your camera via a USB cable to the supplied power adaptor or directly from your PC.

It also doubles as A/v Out. Wait, so where is the HDMI if it is capable of HD video recording? Well, we didn’t find any. Even though the S4000 is capable of capturing 720p HD video, there isn’t a way to playback the videos directly from your camera to your HDTV.

The battery compartment shares the space with the SD memory card space. The battery is Nikon’s EN-EL10 Lithium-ion rechargable battery which is slim and light. The memory card slot accepts both SD and SDHC cards.

The Back

A 3-inch touchscreen, two buttons (Scene/Shooting mode and playback) and a flash lamp. That’s how simple it is. We will “touch on” more about the touchscreen experience on the next page.

The Top

At the top, we see the power button which is flushed with the camera’s surface, the shutter button and also the zooming dial, all placed very neatly.
