Nintendo has teamed up with Namco Bandai to work on the latest games in the Super Smash Bros. series, with two titles planned, one for the Wii U and one for the 3DS.

Masahiro Sakurai, head of game studio Sora and director of the popular fighting games, revealed that work had begun on the new Super Smash Bros. titles, explaining that he wanted to curb speculation by announcing the games now so that there is greater freedom during development.

“The project has just gotten started,” Sakurai said. “Bear in mind that not only are we developing two titles simultaneously, but we announced the project before we even started actual development, so I'm afraid we will likely have to keep you waiting for quite a while.”

Masaya Kobayashi from Namco Bandai announced that they are bringing on board their best developers, including Yoshito Higuichi, producer and director of the “Tales” series, Tetsuya Akatsuka, producer and director of Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs., the art and sound director of the SoulCalibur series, and the main development team behind the Tekken series, with more top talent expected to join the production team over time.

Since development is still in its early stages not much is known about the games and how they will play, but they are expected to feature some interactivity options for those who purchase both titles. Potentially this might mean the ability to unlock a character in one game and port them over to the other, with possible exclusive characters limited to each game as an enticement to buy both.

The Wii U is rumoured to release on 21 December and it is doubtful if the latest Super Smash Bros. game will be ready in time. The 3DS title is likely in a similar boat.
