nokia lumia 800 2 Nokia finally announces its Windows Phone 7 handsets

As per the leak hours before the launch event, Nokia's two new Windows Phone 7 handsets did indeed end up being the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 and technically speaking, there's very little difference between the two handsets. Also announced at Nokia World 2011 was the Asha 303, Asha 300, Asha 201 and Asha 200 Symbian S40 6th Edition handsets and a partnership with Monster which will see Nokia ship co-branded headsets, but we'll cover those in separate news posts.

The Lumia 800 and 710 are near enough identical in terms of spec, as both handsets sport a 3.7-inch WVGA (800×480) resolution display, although the Lumia 800 has an AMOLED display (no specifics are mentioned beyond this) whereas the Lumia 710 gets to make do with a standard LCD display. Both handsets also sport a 1.4GHz single core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 processor and 512MB of RAM. Other shared features include 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS, a micro USB port and a 3.5mm jack. Finally the two handsets support HSDPA speeds of up to 14.4Mbps and HSUPA speeds of up to 5.76MBps and of course Windows Mobile 7.5 Mango.

The Lumia 800 features 16GB of internal storage memory, an 8Megapixel Carl Zeiss branded auto-focus camera with an f2.2 aperture, LED flash and 720p video recording. It also has an accelerometer, proximity sensor and magnetometer. Its non-removable battery is rated at 1,450mAh and Nokia claims 13h 2G talk time and 9.5h 3G talk time with standby figures of 265h and 335h respectively. As mentioned in the leak ahead of the launch event, the Lumia 800 measures 116.5×61.2×12.1mm and weighs in at 142g. The Lumia 800 will hit retail in Europe early next month for around €420 (S$745) off contract and will be available in black, cyan and magenta. The Lumia 710 which is the more affordable of the two does as you might already have guess, come with slightly less features. It has a 5Megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash and 720p video recording, 8GB of storage and apparently without any of the sensors of the Lumia 800 if Nokia's spec sheet is correct. It has a smaller, removable 1,300mAh battery and the handset is also slightly smaller at 119×52.4×12.5mm and somewhat lighter at 125.5g. The battery is said to be good for up to 6.9h of 2G talk time and 7.6h of 3G talk time and up to 400h standby time. The Lumia 710 is expected to hit retail in Europe for €270 (S$480) without a contract in a wide range of colour option for the back of the phone, including black, white, cyan, fuchsia and yellow, although the front will only be available in black or white. In the box you'll get a USB charger, a data cable and a headset.
