Nokia’s forthcoming ‘Bittersweet shimmer’ firmware update, an extension of Windows Phone’s GDR3 release for Lumia handsets, will update the Glance Screen feature with the ability to display notifications.
The Glance feature currently shows only time and battery information when the device is idle, meaning users still have to unlock the phone to see if there are any pending alerts. Notifications on Glance Screen were earlier seen in a leaked set of pictures and videos of the upcoming update, but a photo posted by Microsoft Norway (and later pulled down) confirms it in an official capacity, showing off a Lumia 925 with text and email notifications just below the clock.
Nokia’s Bittersweet shimmer and GDR3 are expected to debut on the Lumia 1520, the 6-inch Windows Phone that will be unveiled at Nokia’s Abu Dhabi event next month, and should be rolled out to existing handsets soon after. Other features of the update will reportedly include a driving mode, screen rotation lock, multitasking improvements, and more.
