The company says due to the changes in iOS 7 that “harm the user experience,” Nokia Here Maps will no longer be available for Apple mobile devices.
There’s certainly no shortage of mapping solutions for iOS devices. There’s Cupertino’s homegrown Apple Maps, which works a lot better now than it used to when it was first launched. There’s Google Maps, which used to be pre-installed on all iOS devices prior to the launch of Apple Maps, it is now available as a standalone app itself. Those who prefer using Nokia Here Maps are out of luck though, because the company feels that the latest and greatest iOS update taints its app’s user experience.
Despite having confirmed its decision to remove the app, Nokia hasn’t revealed exactly what issues it has with iOS 7. Nokia Here Maps was first released for iOS in November 2012, when Apple Maps was the target of severe criticism due to various issues. Through the app, users had access to public transport information, voice-guided navigation and even offline caching.
Those who still want to use the Finnish company’s mapping service can do so through the web browser on their iOS devices. The Here Maps web app features public transit information, search and routing, all of which can be accessed for free.
