You know, I’ve never been one to encourage commercials that promote a product by going at the competition’s throat. But if you can do it in style, with grace, humor and taste, I say go for it.

And that’s exactly what Nokia’s done in the latest Lumia 1020 ad. The newest and possibly greatest Windows smartphone has amazed just as much as it’s disappointed, featuring a state-of-the-art 41 MP PureView camera with Carl Zeiss optics, optical image stabilization, Xenon and LED flash, but packing otherwise mediocre hardware and costing a little too much.

Still, that rear-facing snapper remains a major selling point, which Nokia intends to aggressively advertise in order to boost sales. Enter the newest chapter in the “Don’t fight. Switch” saga.

Though it only lasts 60 seconds, the Lumia 1020 commercial embedded below manages to throw enough punches in Apple and Samsung’s direction to send both of them on the ropes. The concept is as simple as it is amusing and the execution is simply brilliant.

Apple’s panorama mode and Samsung’s drama shot feature are very niftily integrated in the story and, of course, blasted and mocked. But by far the most ridiculously hilarious part comes in the last four seconds of the clip, when an elderly iPhone user (what a coincidence) tries to quote one of Apple’s own recent ads, but is tackled to the ground before being able to finish.

I’m literally watching that scene as I’m writing this and just can’t stop laughing. Well played, Nokia, well played indeed.
