Nokia's Saviour, MeeGo 1.1 Is Here

Reported by on Monday, November 1 2010 2:21 pm

It is a long wait, but MeeGo is now here. The version 1.1 of the new mobile platform, jointly developed by Intel and Nokia, is available for download and is highly likely that the Nokia N900 will be tested with this. Windows Phone 7 has recently been launched, but it is still anyone's guess as to when MeeGo smartphones will be out in this competitive market.

MeeGo has not been expected to arrive so soon, even though it was scheduled to be available in Q4 this year. According to news sources, Version 1.1 of the new mobile platform is already available for download and that the Nokia N900 can be installed with MeeGo. On top of that, the N900 also claims to be able to dual-boot both MeeGo and Maemo operating systems.

Of course, currently the Nokia N900 with MeeGo installed is still an unfinished product. Few days ago, a Nokia N900 engineer has hinted that MeeGo version 1.1 will be completed by end of November and that the revised version of the mobile platform will allow dual-booting of Maemo and Meego. The apps supporting both mobile operating systems will also be launched then.

The updated version 1.2 of MeeGo may also come earlier than expected, and obviously the mobile platform will not just support N900, but also devices incorporating Atom and Arm7 processors. Intel has also officially stated that MeeGo-based mobile phones will only be available early 2011. Will it be too late for Nokia to compete in this fierce mobile smartphone market?
