Nokia has confirmed that it will release a new smartphone powered by Windows Phone 8 soon, showing a dogged determination to stick with its partnership with Microsoft.

The Finnish mobile giant, which was once the dominant player in the mobile phone arena, will be hosting the Nokia World event in Helsinki in early September, a week or so before Apple's 12 September event, which is widely expected to unveil the new iPhone.

Nokia's CEO, Stephen Elop, said that Windows Phone 8 devices designed by the company will launch in the “relatively near term,” refusing to confirm or deny a September date. Given the importance in beating Apple to the punch, however, it is likely that we will see the new Nokia phone unveiled on 5 or 6 September.

The company has been losing money since its ill-fated deal with Microsoft early last year, which has so far failed to pay off.  Nokia lost a whopping €1.53 billion in the second quarter of this year and Standard & Poor's recently slashed its rating to BB- with a negative outlook, making it vital that it sees some success with its next model.

Despite these setbacks, Elop seems content with Microsoft as an ally. “I don't think about rewinding the clock and thinking about competing elsewhere,” he said, according to Reuters. If Nokia continues to lose money and ground to Apple, Google and Samsung, however, he might have to start considering other options before there is no time left for the company.
