We’ve just taken a look at the 6600 DDR2 from NVIDIA that was
put out to match up against the ATi X1000 series of graphics chipsets. Now,
we take a look at the 6800 GS, another gap filler pushed out to meet the competition.
This one fits right in between the 6800 GT and standard 6800.

Let’s take a look at the specifications of this reference board,
and how it lines up in the family of the 6800s.

Although it has an engine core clock of 425Mhz, even 25Mhz higher than the
6800 Ultra, this card has only 12 pipelines compared to the 16 pipelines found
on the 6800 Ultra and 6800 GT. Other than that, it has one less vertex engine
compared to the 6800 GT and Ultra, but offer the same 256MB of GDDR3 memory.
Performance is rated to be slower than a 6800 GT but faster than a 6800 standard.

Power consumption-wise, it is signifcantly lower than the 6800 GT, with a maximum
utilization of 70w. Thus, NVIDIA recommends at least a 350w power supply for
single card operation and a 420w unit for dual card SLI operation.
