ATI is expected to or has already step up its own development and production of Southbridge chips after NVIDIA announced on February 21 that it completed the acquisition of ULi Electronics. ATI had also tried to acquire ULi, but the deal fell through as the two companies differed on the price, paving the way for Nvidia to take up ULi. Following completion of the acquisition, Nvidia will discontinue marketing ULi-branded products and instead will market them under the Nvidia name. ULi’s single-chip solution, the ULi 1697, for example, may be renamed as the Nvidia M1697.
