Rumor has it that Microsoft Office for iPad release might be coming sooner than we think.

There hasn’t been much talk about Office for iPad in recent weeks, one could be forgiven for thinking that perhaps Microsoft had dropped the idea altogether. That certainly doesn’t seem to be the case, if latest reports are to be believed. Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said earlier that Office for iPad would be released after the touch-centric implementation of Office, apparently codenamed “Gemini” was released for Windows 8. Word on the street now is that the iPad version, believed to be codenamed “Miramar” could very well be released first prior to Gemini.

Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet claims to have heard that Ballmer actually approved the suggestion by the Office team that Miramar should be released as soon as it was ready, and that they shouldn’t first wait for Gemini to hit the market. Based on these discussions, it is now being predicted that the Office for iPad release might take place in the first half of 2014, though last summer it was rumored that the release won’t take place until the Fall of 2014.

Obviously its not known right now just how Microsoft will distribute Office for iPad, it is possible that it may be tied to an Office 365 subscription. Microsoft hasn’t officially commented on this report, so even if it comes from a well connected reporter, its best to take this with a grain of salt.
