The zoom range of so called super-zoom cameras just keep increasing and Olympus latest model, the SP-810UZ has gained an extra 6x zoom over its predecessor.  Strangely enough the new model is also cheaper than the old one, albeit not by a huge amount of money, but a saving is a saving, or is it?

The zoom range of so called super-zoom cameras just keep increasing and Olympus latest model, the SP-810UZ has gained an extra 6x zoom over its predecessor.  Strangely enough the new model is also cheaper than the old one, albeit not by a huge amount of money, but a saving is a saving, or is it?

The SP-810UZ has kept the same 14 Megapixel  1/2.3in sensor as its older sibling the SP-800UZ, but the zoom range has gone from 28-840mm (35mm equivalent) to 24-864mm (35mm equivalent), or in simple terms, from 30x to 36x. The new lens has become both wider and longer which is all good news, but what isn’t so great is that the aperture range has been reduced from f2.8-5.6 to f3.3-5.7 which means darker pictures, especially indoors.

On top of that, Olympus has also increased the fastest ISO setting from 50 to 80 and removed the 3200 options, at least according to specs on the company website. Beyond shooting 14 Megapixel stills, the SP-810UZ will also shoot video in 720p and it has gained support for both HDMI output and SDXC cards. Olympus didn’t bother upgrading the 3in 230K dot display though, but this is sadly pretty much the norm for most consumer level cameras.

The MSRP for the SP-810UZ is US$329.99 which is US$20 cheaper than the SP-800UZ, although we’re fairly certain that the old model can be picked up on the cheap now.
