Olympus TOUGH TG-310 & TG-610

Digital cameras are not built to withstand abuse such as hard knocks, shocks and immersion in fluids. However, even the most careful person cannot help but expose his or her camera to the aforementioned abuses every once a while, especially when using the device in less-than-hospitable environments. Needless to say, those who often subject their camera to the daily knocks and splashes of life would appreciate the updates Olympus has made to their TOUGH line of rugged cameras.

Like their name suggests, the new Olympus TOUGH TG-310 and TG-610 cameras are designed to continue functioning under hostile environments which will otherwise damage or wreck the average digicams sold in the market today.  Looks-wise, the TG-310 and TG610 are almost identical, although the degree of punishment they can take varies somewhat. Olympus claims that the TG-310 can withstand shocks from falls up to 1.5 meters, immersion in fluids at up to 3 meters and is protected from freezing at temperatures up to -10 degrees Celsius, while the TG-610 can support immersion in fluids at up to 5 meters, making both cameras suitable for underwater photography.

In addition, the specifications between both cameras are slightly different: while the TG-310 sports a 3.6 zoom lens, the TG-610 drops the zoom lens in favor of a higher-resolution LCD monitor located at its rear.

Both the TG-310 and TG-610 are scheduled to be available for sale in Singapore in end January and February this year: no official pricing for either camera has been revealed.

Olympus VG-130 & VG-120

While cameras that cater to specific needs and requirements are always welcomed, it is also important that manufacturers do not neglect the average consumer who only need a general-purpose camera which is capable of taking good stills and recording decent videos. And Olympus has shown that it has not forgotten about such users with the introduction of the new VG-130 and VG-120 digital cameras.

It is also capable of recording HD videos at up to a resolution of 1280 x 720, making it suitable as an all-rounded compact camera.
