The Ouya has officially been delayed from June 4 to June 25 in order to meet customer demand and also to fix a controller defect that was plaguing current units.
It feels like we’ve been talking about the $99 Ouya for a long time now leading up to its release and unfortunately it seems we’ll have to speculate on whether or not it becomes a success for a little longer because they have just announced it is being delayed. It was originally scheduled to launch on June 4, but instead, it will now be releasing on June 25.
The CEO of Ouya provides the following as reasoning for the delay:
"We've had incredibly positive reactions from our retail partners, and so in order to meet their greater than expected demand, we decided to shift the launch date by a couple of weeks – three weeks – which will allow us to create more units and, basically, have more units on store shelves in June."
She continued to mention that the controller defect, where the buttons were getting stuck beneath the faceplate, is another issue being addressed with this delay. Uhrman says that this has been taken care of by increasing the size of the button holes by a small amount ensuring that it is impossible for the buttons to get stuck below the faceplate. All Ouyas will ship with the updated controller upon release. If you’re a kickstarter who feels slighted, worry not, because they’ll be sending them to backers as well.
The Ouya is pegged as the small piece of hardware with big ideas and some remain skeptical on whether or not developers and consumers alike will buy into it on a large scale. Delays like this certainly aren’t helping the cause, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
