To test the performance of the Palit GeForce GTX 465, we have the following testbed:
- Intel Core i7-965 Processor Extreme Edition, at 3.82GHz (166 x 22)
- Prolimatech Armageddon CPU cooler with dual Thermalright X-Silent 140
- ASUS Rampage III Gene (Intel X58 Express)
- 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 memory in tri-channel, at 1660MHz CL8-8-8-24-1T

In the event that the GPUs are not good enough to make the cut for a higher spec-ed SKU, it is common practice for manufacturers to use these ‘defective’ silicon on a lower end SKU instead – known as die harvesting.
It would seem that the use of crippled GF100 cores on the GeForce GTX 465 would translate to mediocre overclocking abilities, but that was simply not the case for the Palit GeForce GTX 465.
MSI’s Afterburner utility and FurMark were used for overclocking tests. We first raised the fan control to 75% before ramping up the clocks. The default frequencies on the Palit GeForce GTX 465 are 607MHz, 1215MHz and 3207MHz for the core, shader and memory respectively.
The core voltage adjustment slider was greyed out; we had only the frequency sliders to play with. Our first stop was at 775MHz, 1550MHz and 3800MHz respectively – the Palit card was still going strong with FurMark running and no signs of display corruption.
We pushed the sliders further and finally settled at an impressive 825MHz for the core, 1650MHz for the shader, and 4000MHz for the memory. We attempted various frequencies from this point, up to 850/1700/4100, but we all we got was 3D corruption.
Here is a screenshot of the Palit GeForce GTX 465 completing Futuremark’s 3DMark Vantage in Extreme preset, with the PhysX Processing Unit (PPU) disabled.
Rather then trying for an overclock that is just good enough for a run of 3DMark Vantage, this Palit card was made to sit through entire benchmarking sessions overclocked at 825/1650/4000. Head on to the next page for performance figures.
