The first benchmark lined up for today is Resident Evil 5, a survival horror third-person shooter game. It is a DirectX 10 title, and system requirements are pretty modest.

Things are not off to a good start (as expected). Even at a resolution of 1680 x 1050, the GeForce GTX 465 at default frequencies falls behind the Radeon HD 5850 by over 10%. However, the overclocked Palit is 30% and 15% faster than the default 465 and HD 5850 respectively.

At 1920 x 1200, the default 465 lags further behind. While the overclocked Palit impressively held off the HD 5850, the margin has become substantially smaller.

At 2560 x 1600, the gap between the 465 and the HD 5850 widens. The overclocked Palit runs out of steam as well, but that is simply a limitation of the (overly) cut-down GF100 part.

 

In general, playing Resident Evil 5 at all three resolutions with the GeForce GTX 465 at default frequencies is not going to be an issue, but it definitely does not look good when comparing frame rates against the ATI Radeon HD 5850.

Only when the Palit card has been ruthlessly overclocked do we see it being around 10% to 15% faster at lower resolutions and neck-to-neck at 2560 x 1600 when compared to the HD 5850.

 


 

Next, we ran a racing simulator game Colin McRae: Dirt 2, the sequel to Colin McRae: Dirt. This is a DirectX 11 title, and it will make use of the hardware tessellator on DirectX 11 capable graphics cards.

At present, we have our details at High preset. Hardware tessellated dynamic cloth is enabled, but hardware tessellated dynamic water and hardware tessellated dynamic crowds will only be enabled with the Ultra preset.

The overclocked Palit pulls off an impressive lead of about 40% over the default 465 and HD 5850 at 1680 x 1050.

Nothing has changed at 1920 x 1200: the default 465 is still slightly faster than the HD 5850, while the overclocked Palit is comfortably ahead.

The default 465 is now slower than the HD 5850 at 2560 x 1600. The difference between the overclocked Palit and the HD 5850 is trimmed to 20%.

 

This is one game where the GeForce GTX 465 SKU does not look awful against the Radeon HD 5850. At lower resolutions, the 465 is slightly faster than the HD 5850.

On the other hand, the overclocked Palit GeForce GTX 465 is comfortably ahead of a stock 465 and the Radeon HD 5850.
