K01 1 Pentax K 01 leaks ahead of imminent launch

Besides Canon, Pentax was the only DSLR camera manufacturer that didn't offer a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, but that should change today with the introduction of the Pentax K-01. Both pictures and partial specifications of the new camera have already leaked, so we can give you a glimpse of what to expect ahead of the launch.

Unlike most of its competitors, bar Panasonic, Pentax has gone for a fairly traditional camera design for the K-01 and it doesn't appear that Pentax has gone out of its way to make the most compact mirrorless interchangeable lens camera in the market. On the other hand, the company hasn't skimped on quality as the camera features an aluminium frame and there's also plenty of dials and buttons, something that should appeal to more professional users.

Thanks to a press release issued by one of Pentax retail partners, we also have an idea about the specifications of the upcoming camera. The K-01 uses the standard Pentax K-mount and is as such as far as we're aware, the only mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with an APS-C size sensor that uses the same mount as its predecessors. All of Pentax competitors require a lens adapter to use older lenses and this could prove to be a huge advantage for Pentax when it comes to getting current Pentax camera owners to upgrade to the K-01.

The sensor is a 16Megapixel APS-C size CMOS unit which offers multiple aspect ratios and is claimed to offer low noise image capture and as with previous Pentax DSLR cameras the K-01 has sensor-shift image stabilization and a dust reduction system. The K-01 is capable of capturing 1080p30 video as well as 720p60 using H.264 encoding. The camera can also shoot 6 FPS bursts, offers shutter speeds of 1/4000 to 30 seconds and has an ISO range of between 100 and 25,600. As with your average DSLR the K-01 offers P, Av, Tv and M shooting modes, as well as fully automatic and various creative modes and filters.

Other features include a 3-inch LCD with 920,000 dots, not cutting edge, but at least as good as most of its competitors if not better, a built in pop-up flash as well as a standard Pentax hot-shoe, something that is rare in this market segment. You also get focus peaking which helps when focusing manually, in-camera HDR support and JPEG as well as RAW capture. As for the rest of the features we'll just have to wait and see, but some rumours suggest that we might be seeing a microphone input and we'd expect HDMI connectivity and support for SDXC cards.

In addition to the K-01, Pentax will also be launching its new DA 40mm f/2.8 XS lens which is a 9.1mm thick pancake lens that weighs in at a mere 51g. This will be one of the lens options that will be bundled with the K-01 at launch, although Pentax will also offer it on its own.

The Pentax K-01 is expected to have a MSRP of US$749 (S$935) body only, US$899 (S$1125) with the 40mm pancake lens and US$999 (S$1245) with an 18-55 and 50-200mm lens bundle. The K-01 should be available in black, silver and apparently yellow as well. Full details, including availability is expected to be revealed later today.
