WG 2 1 Pentax outs 13th generation of waterproof cameras

Just about every single camera maker offers a waterproof model these days, but Pentax was one of the first, if not the first company to offer an affordable waterproof consumer grade digital camera with the original Optio WP. Now the company has announced its 13th generation of waterproof cameras in the shape of the WG-2 which bumps several of the specs up from the WG-1.

Key upgrades to the WG-2 over the WG-1 include 1080p30 and 720p60 video modes, an extra two meters of waterproofing, now good down to 12m, a slightly higher resolution sensor at 16Megapixles and a slightly larger and higher resolution 3-inch LCD screen with 460k dots. Another interesting addition the digital microscope mode where Pentax has added a sixth LED light around the lens to allow for better quality macro shots compared to the WG-1.

As with the WG-1, the WG-2 comes in two versions, with or without GPS. A new accessory has also been made available for the WG-2 which is a "SportMount Chest Harness" which allows for hands-free video capture, although we're not sure how good chest level video looks. The GPS less versions of the WG-2 will come in black or black and red, whereas the GPS equipped models will come in black and orange and black and silver.

The WG-2 is expected to hit retail next month with pricing starting at US$349.95 (S$435) for the SKU without GPS and US$399.95 (S$499) for the one with GPS. The chest harness won't be available until late spring or early summer and will retail for US$49.95 (S$62) which seems quite expensive for a fancy strap.
