Creating a power load with resistors is nice and easy; however creating an automated load by using both resistors and capacitors in order to fully emulate computer components is by far better. The heart of our DC load is composed of a large number of Arcol aluminum clad resistors and small electrolytic capacitors, attached to 8 relay boards (64 single relays) made by KMtronic. The relay boards are controlled by a RS485 controller, connected to our PC via a USB 2.0 cable. Our custom software opens and/or closes those relays to match the load parameters we input each time we test a power supply, allowing both semi-automatic and completely manual control of the load.
