Prolimatech Genesis CPU Cooler Review
Despite the fact that the installation of the Genesis is fairly simple and straightforward, the sheer size of the cooler and the mounting method necessitate the removal of the motherboard from the case, even if the motherboard tray has an opening behind the CPU area. Although it is possible to install the Genesis with the system already assembled inside a case, we strongly recommend against it.
The first installation step requires the preparation of the metallic retention backplate. This is done by inserting the four hollow studs in the appropriate holes for your CPU socket and securing them using the provided rubber O-rings.
After the backplate is ready, the user has to insert it from the rear side of the motherboard and secure the aluminum retention braces onto the motherboard by using the supplied thumbscrews and stand-offs. Note that the braces also control the orientation of the Genesis, therefore the user needs to install them in parallel with the motherboard's expansion slots, otherwise the Genesis will block at least two expansion slots (including the first GFX card slot).
After the retention braces are installed and secured, the next step requires the application of a thin layer of thermal compound on the CPU. After the CPU is prepared, the user can install the Genesis on it by tightening the thick black aluminum retention bar with the provided spring screws. This step requires the use of a typical Philips PH2 screwdriver.
Finally, the fans need to be secured with the wire clips. Note that Prolimatech does NOT supply any fans with the purchase of this cooler by default. We installed one Blue Vortex 12 LED 120mm 1600RPM fan and one Blue Vortex 14 LED 140mm 1000RPM fan on the Genesis for your reference (the cooler will be later tested with two 140mm fans installed). The end user may freely choose any 120/140 mm fan(s); however we would recommend the installation of 140mm fans, as they are the exact size for covering the entirety of the cooler's fins.
The Genesis covers most of the top side of a motherboard, including all of the RAM slots. Normal RAM modules will fit beneath the Genesis, which is the point of this design as the cooling fan is also supposed to be cooling the RAM and other motherboard components, yet we strongly advice against the use of RAM modules with tall heatsinks as they are highly likely to interfere with the installation of the cooler.
